Family law matters can be resolved in a number of ways: litigation, mediation and collaboration. Carlton is well versed in all these methods as a trained mediator, certified collaborative professional and experienced and well-regarded trial lawyer. Each case is different and he customizes his approach for each case. As most matters involve financial issues, his background as a senior partner of the firm; an MBA; past managing partner of the firm; certified public accountant and certified financial planner, provides an extraordinary level of sophistication to each case. With a focus on recognizing financial opportunities, he guides clients to strategic decisions that are geared to a positive return. Highly regarded by lawyers, financial professionals, the business community and judges, Mr. Marcyan represents high-level executives, entrepreneurs, professionals and their spouses. He is the firm’s mediation practice group leader providing his experience as a mediator certified by circuit courts in and around the Chicago area.
He is the father of three children and his wife, Ana, is an attorney as well. His interests include cross-country motorcycling, scuba diving, and sharing advice as trustee of one of the major high school military academies in the country.
Known for his patience and style, Mr. Marcyan believes that listening carefully to clients and working together with them makes for a stronger case. He emphasizes matching the right divorce process to the client's needs. An experienced litigator, Mr. Marcyan has also been a leader in the development of collaborative law in Illinois law.
Prior to joining Schiller DuCanto & Fleck LLP, Mr. Marcyan worked as an auditor and tax specialist for Coopers & Lybrand, one of the largest international accounting firms now known as PricewaterhouseCoopers, and the Internal Revenue Service while in law school; during his college years was in the United States Marine Corps. His vast accounting and tax experience and training enable him to evaluate transactions and businesses objectively and quickly understand financial circumstances that elude other divorce lawyers.
A graduate of the John Marshall Law School, Mr. Marcyan received his bachelor's degree from DePaul University and completed his MBA, with honors, at the Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. He is a Fellow of both the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and International Academy of Family Lawyers and a member of the American Bar Association, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and Illinois Society of CPAs. He is the past president of the Collaborative Law Institute of Illinois and past Chairman of the firm's Executive Committee and Managing Partner. He is a past president of the Lake County Bar Foundation, a board member of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts-Illinois and a trustee of the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas. He is also a member of the Chicago Crime Commission. Involved in trial practice training for lawyers and experts, he is a principal with Courtroom Bootcamp, LLC. and lectures throughout the country on topics of litigation, taxation, mediation and collaborative law.
